Welcome

The primary mission of the Kendall And Taylor Atkinson Foundation (KATA) isto support scientific and medical research of effective treatments and a cure for Fanconi anemia (FA), a deadly blood disease. Research is supported through the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund.

"The Fanconi Anemia Research Fund is the single best orphan disease research support group in the world. It is a model for demonstrating how a small group of dedicated families can speed the pace of scientific progress and bring realistic hope to patients with an otherwise fatal disorder."

- David Nathan, MD Distinguished Professor Harvard Medical School; Winner, National Medal of Science, 1990.

With the commitment to reflect the lives and hearts of Kendall and Taylor, KATA also gives to causes that improve the lives of children living with adversity.

KATA is governed by a nine member Board of Directors that is committed to minimizing costs in order to maximize the impact of money raised.  Since its formation in 2006, KATA has kept its combined administrative and fundraising costs at less than 10%.

        Program Accomplishments

Over $683,000 has been given to fund Fanconi anemia research.

One study funded was a multi-institution (Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the University of Oregon) project involving the testing of small molecules on cancer prone mice to discover therapeutics that will work to ameliorate the effects of Fanconi anemia, including ones that will potentially prevent or delay cancer.

Just recently the National Institutes of Health recognized the far reaching value of this initial FA research and gave the group a 10.7 million dollar grant to continue their work!

Over $167,000 has been given to enhance the lives of children who face the challenges of disease, disability and poverty.

Projects included in this funding have been:

* Handicap equipped cabins at Camp Barnabas, a summer camp for kids with special needs.

* Scholarships for childern to participate in handicap sports programs through Children's Hospital and the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park.

* Scholarship dollars for FA families to attend Camp Sunshine for the purpose of education, networking and respite.
