IMPACT
Research has increased the rate of successful bone marrow transplants in FA from 20% in the 1990’s when Kendall and Taylor were diagnosed to over 90% today.
In addition, FA research led to a new and milder transplant therapy most commonly used in adults who cannot tolerate high doses of chemotherapy for leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
- Therapies developed for FA patients benefit breast cancer patients as well. To date, 23 FA genes have been identified. Of these 23 genes, 5 are also breast susceptibility genes, including BRACA2.
- FA research is unlocking the mysteries of DNA repair problems which are at the root, not only of FA, but of cancer as well.
- Pilot funding has enabled many FA researchers to go on to receive major grants from the National Institutes of Health and other sources worldwide.
